Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of malocclusions and the correction of problems related to skeletal growth. Modern approaches to the Orthodontic patient provide a 360 ° evaluation: each patient is evaluated from an occlusal, skeletal point of view, great importance is given to the aesthetics of the face, age and functionality of the perioral musculature is also considered.
To date, to say that orthodontics deals with straightening of teeth is an understatement: thanks to modern imaging techniques, scanners and the possibility of having countless orthodontic devices available, orthodontics is a versatile branch with many application possibilities, which often works closely with implant surgery, prosthetics and periodontology. It is often thought that only children can put the braces on and that the braces are strange cumbersome, annoying and “ugly” gadgets: this is a wrong belief! An up-to-date orthodontist has a wide range of techniques and devices available, many of which are less aesthetically impacting and more comfortable than in the past.
There are no age limits to start orthodontic therapy, teeth move throughout life! Each patient – adult or child – must be assessed individually because no case is alike.
It is advisable to carry out the first orthodontic checkup around the age of 5, as many malocclusions can be intercepted early and successfully already in pediatric age. Waiting for all the milk teeth to fall out to make an orthodontic evaluation in many cases means in some cases already being enormously behind the pathology to be treated, with an increase in the duration of treatment and the possibility of having to accept occlusal compromises.
The orthodontic evaluation always starts from the collection of a series of records necessary for the “case study”: face photos, photos of the teeth, orthopanoramic radiography and telecranium, impressions. Starting an orthodontic therapy without all this information is like walking in the dark: without x-rays it is not possible to know if all the dental elements are present, how they are positioned, if there are more teeth, the type of growth… A correct orthodontic path always begins from a correct evaluation.
